4. A locking differential is used to prevent a single wheel from spinning freely.
It is NOT used to prevent rolling backwards on steep hills.

When activated, locking differentials will drive both axles at the same speed which helps to prevent spinning of just one wheel. There are 3 main types of differentials: locking, limited slip and open.

Perhaps chock blocks, the parking brake, the brake pedal or a device called a mico-lock will help you from rolling back on steep hills.
