One of the greatest dangers when crossing deep water is ingesting water into the air intake of the engine. Ingested water will not only stall the engine it could possibly break a piston or bend a connecting rod inside the engine due to extreme hydraulic forces. Going slow through deep water helps to prevent splashing and minimizes the buildup of a "wall of water" in front of your vehicle.
A raised or relocated intake location is one of the easiest modifications that you can make to prevent water ingestion. Of course you could stay away from deep water crossings too!
