Fab #6 Differential Protection
After a run on the Fordyce Trail and a dented front
differential it was time to add some protection to that vital area of
our Project Toyota.
A hard enough hit to the face of your differential could lead to the ring
gear cutting through and leaking all your fluids leaving you dead in the
trail as well as a total axle rebuild!
Toyota's don't have a removable diff cover so simple bolt on protection
is not available other that a few products on the market that really don't
do a good enough job for a rock crawler. What we needed was weld on heavy
metal.
The 4x4Beast solution was custom bent .25" plate wrapping around
the bottom face of the diff and transitioning to the drag area without
any lips so there would be no hanging up of the rocks. The top half of
the plate was secured to .5" rod to keep it from pushing into the
diff and ducts were fabbed into the bottom to keep water from being trapped.
This design is such that the ring gear is now totally protected and we
still have access to the diff's filler plug. We can now bash a rock with
the diff guard and push our way up and over it with out sticking or breaking.
